Lake Hartwell, located 30 miles southwest of Greenville, South
Carolina and 90 miles Northeast of Atlanta, Georgia is with out a doubt the most
beautiful lake in the Southeastern United States. Interstate 85 bisects Lake
Hartwell making it easily accessible. Being "fed" by two rivers that come right
out of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the water in Lake Hartwell is reported to be
purer than in many municipal water systems. Lake Hartwell covers a land area
of 56,000 acres and has 962 miles of shoreline. Having a width of approximately
six miles at its widest point, the views on Lake Hartwell are both picturesque
and panoramic and yet there are innumerable deep water coves and islands that
provide tranquility as in the days of old. On the main body of the lake at sunset,
on is afforded truly spectacular panoramic views of glittering stream of orange-red
across several miles of sky blue water. From many parts of the lake you can see
the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. Outdoor water related recreation
opportunities abound on Lake Hartwell appealing to boaters of all kinds, whether
their specialty is sailing, motor boating, water skiing, canoeing, kayaking,
or fishing. Coves and vast areas of quiet water provide the water skier with
excellent surfaces on which to pursue his sport. Swimmers delight in the natural
sand beaches that are numerous along the shore of the lake and around its many
islands. Picnicking, sight seeing and many outdoor activities can be enjoyed
at the many public recreation areas located around the lake. Lake Hartwell affords
the avid fisherman and the weekend angler equal opportunities for rewarding fishing
experiences. Having a depth of 200 feet, the 21 species of edible fish in the
lake have plenty of room to navigate. Large mouth bass, black crappie, bluegill
bream, hybrid bass and walleyed pike are abundant. White bass, striped bass and
pickerel are also found in substantial numbers. Its only fitting that a magnificent
lake such as Hartwell be located in the quiet and serene atmosphere of a rural
type setting and yet only 1.5 hours from both Atlanta, Georgia and Highlands,
North Carolina, 30 minutes from Greenville, South Carolina and 40 minutes from
Greenville/Spartanburg International airport. Clemson University is on its shoreline
as is Anderson.
